For Rayden Goh Jun Yi, a student from Jurong Pioneer Junior College, the A-Level results are more than just grades. They mark the culmination of a journey defined by self-discovery, courage, and the determination to choose a path that truly fits him.
After his O-Levels in 2023, Rayden entered polytechnic, believing that a flexible post-secondary pathway and greater independence would fuel his growth. At first, the freedom felt liberating, but he soon realised its downside. Despite putting in effort, he didn’t thrive as he had hoped. The highly flexible schedule left him struggling to manage his time, sustain focus, and maintain consistent effort.
“I was disappointed — not just with the grades, but with myself,” Rayden recalled. Rather than blaming circumstances, he reflected on his habits and discovered that he thrived under structure: clear routines, guided lessons, and defined expectations. Flexibility, he realised, made it harder to channel his energy effectively.
Armed with five O-Level distinctions, Rayden made a bold decision: he changed course through the Joint Admissions Exercise and enrolled at Jurong Pioneer Junior College (JPJC). Leaving behind familiar routines and stepping into a more rigorous system was daunting, but he viewed it not as a retreat, but as a deliberate step forward.
At JPJC, structure became his anchor. Fixed timetables, sequenced lessons, and regular assessments gave rhythm and clarity to his days. Adapting wasn’t easy — punctuality, discipline, and stamina were tested daily. Balancing a demanding academic schedule with a daily commute of over an hour each way from Punggol required careful planning and commitment. Yet the challenge strengthened his resilience, time-management skills, and ability to sustain effort — marking a significant shift from his earlier academic experiences.
“The structure made it simple to know what I needed to do each day,” he said. “Once I adapted, it helped me focus and build better habits.”
Academically, Rayden began to flourish. The rigour of H2 science and mathematics pushed him to engage deeply with complex concepts, from advanced scientific theories to intricate mathematical frameworks. He found these challenges stimulating and rewarding, discovering that he could grasp difficult ideas quickly, apply them across contexts, and articulate his understanding clearly — often supporting his peers in the process. Regular tutorials and assessments provided structured feedback, reinforcing his confidence that consistent effort translated into progress. Subjects such as General Paper and H1 Economics further broadened his perspective, encouraging him to stay attuned to global developments and think critically about contemporary issues. Project Work, meanwhile, reinforced the importance of collaboration, communication, and collective problem-solving.
A key pillar of Rayden’s positive experience at JPJC was the strong support system provided by the college’s teaching staff. His Civics tutor, Mr Joseph Lee, and other subject tutors conducted frequent check-ins, taking a holistic interest in his academic progress, well-being, and adjustment to college life.
“My teachers genuinely cared,” Rayden shared. “Knowing that support was always there made a huge difference.” Whether through timely academic guidance, patient conversations during moments of self-doubt, or prompt responses to questions, his teachers helped him build confidence and maintain momentum, fostering a culture of care and accountability.
Beyond the classroom, JPJC provided Rayden with opportunities to grow as a well-rounded individual. He joined the football CCA, where he found a strong sense of belonging and purpose. Football offered more than physical activity — it became a platform for learning teamwork, resilience, and commitment to a collective goal. Through both victories and setbacks, he learned the importance of perseverance and supporting one another.
Rayden also contributed to the college community as a presenter at the Cyberwellness Carnival, raising awareness about responsible online behaviour. The experience allowed him to give back to the community while honing his communication skills and reinforcing the value of collective effort.
Reflecting on his journey, Rayden credits self-awareness as the key to his growth. He learned to identify his strengths and weaknesses, adjust his habits, and face challenges deliberately and confidently.
Today, success is no longer about flawless performance — it is about resilience, reflection, and the courage to choose a path aligned with one’s strengths. Rayden’s story is a testament to the transformative power of structure, guidance, and supportive relationships. It shows that when students are placed in environments suited to their learning, the possibilities are limitless.
