Racial Harmony Day Commemoration
The 2022 theme for Racial Harmony Day, “Singapore: Our Multicultural Mosaic”, reflects how each community, while having the space to express its own identity as part of Singapore society, also intertwines with others and depicts the unique cultural diversity that characterises Singapore life. Accordingly, our college’s Racial Harmony Day (RHD) programme focused on Singapore’s unique approach to celebrating multiculturalism and building social cohesion, where the experiences of every individual matter and add to our diversity.
This year’s RHD civics lesson, entitled "Regardless of Race", was designed to set students thinking about Singapore's relative position on the Stairway to Respect (using the controversiality scale) based on their personal experiences and knowledge of national and international developments. This was followed by our college’s first in-person RHD Carnival since 2019. Reflecting the college’s emphasis on student empowerment, the carnival was organised by the Community Engagement Council in collaboration with various cultural CCAs and student groups. Based on a RHD passport system, both JC1 and JC2 students enthusiastically explored all the different cultural booths to secure stamps and redeem unique RHD-themed goodie bags.
Booths by the Chinese Cultural Society, Malay Cultural Society and our college’s Tamil teachers and students showcased the essence of our local cultural traditions, including Chinese calligraphy, Bunga Manggar (wedding flowers from crepe) as well as Kolam drawing (Indian Floor Art). In particular, for this year’s RHD Carnival, international students from South Korea, Myanmar and the Philippines also volunteered to set up their own booths to showcase fun and representative aspects of their countries’ cultures, such as the wearing of traditional Korean clothes (Hanbok), playing traditional Filipino games such as Tumbang Preso (using slippers) and even the Burmese tradition of Thanakha Bark Grinding. The presence of these international booths aptly demonstrated the cosmopolitan nature of Singapore’s diverse population, and is a microcosm of the remarkable success of our multicultural nation.
